This a Mixosaurus in a rock matrix. Mixosaurus were a type of smaller ichthyosaur from the Triassic Period that lived around 245 million years ago. They were marine reptiles that resembled a dolphin. This one is from a locale in China.The specimen has some rough preparation mixed with some fabrication. These specimens often look quite a bit rough due to the rudimentary preparation (you’ll notice that you can see the distinct pattern that the stone grinder left in the matrix and fossil). The fabricated parts are the places where the fossilized bone has chipped away, and a stain/paint has been added to ‘fill in’ the absent bone. Parts of the ribs are definitely legit, but a few of the longer ribs have been extended with stain/paint. A lot of the skull appears to be gray epoxy or paint with some smatterings of legit bone throughout. With that said, this specimen has some really nice details. You can see the surface bone detail as clear as day (the verts and ribs) which is really cool. The paddles haven’t preserved that well, but the animal’s right shoulder and proximal arm bones have been preserved. Ever so faintly, you can see where the paddle would be. There are tiny leg bones preserved too. The matrix measures 12″ x 7.5″ x .1875″ thick (approximately) and weighs 1.15 lbs. The fossil measures 10.5″ long. The matrix shows signs of repair being glued together in a few places. Overall the fossil remains in excellent condition. This is a very cool reptile fossil with great matrix colors and some nice fossil preservation. This specimen displays very well. Comes with a free Riker box display.
