LNIB Modded Seiko Prospex SRP079 (aka SBDC053) 200m Baby Marinemaster 62MAS Homage 6R15-04G0I’ve been modding watches for close to 20 years. I just can’t help myself. And that’s what happened here. I fell in love with the SRP079 “Baby Marinemaster” (so called because it is only 200m depth rated compared with the 300m of its big brother) but the hands on this model just didn’t do it for me. And I was looking to make a statement with the sapphire crystal. So I did…. This baby MM model has the heritage of the Marine Master models but also carries the vibe and feel of the original 1965 62MAS diver with the aftermarket homage hands. The overall finish on this watch is stunning – the curved lines, including the Zaratsu superfine polished surfaces offsetting the brushed surfaces – all sealed under the Seiko patented Diashield scratch resistant coating. The 200m water-resistant stainless-steel case measures approximately 42.5mm case without the crown, has a lug to lug length of 50mm, a height of approximately 13.8mm and a lug width of 20mm. The case also has drilled lugs for easy strap swapping. Aside from the case design, shape and finishing, the dial on this watch is a stunning deep subtle sunburst blue with lumibrite indices contained within silver surrounds. The bezel movement is the smoothest I’ve seen on a Seiko – 120 clicks and unidirectional. Of course, Seiko’s LumiBrite needs no introduction. The Seiko lume on the dial is just stunning. Sometimes it is so bright you can see the lume trying to shine during the day…..check out the lume shot. The bezel is also a deep blue and highly reflective making the watch look as much like a dress watch as a functional tool diver. The mirror-like finish on the bezel causes it to reflect light and colours thereby changing its own colour in the process. It is quite stunning. Sometimes I swear it is black and other times a royal blue. So, to the modifications. If you know this model then you know what the original hands looked like. In my mind, a homage to such a special watch would present a closer representation of what that watch looked like. So that is why I chose these after-market 62MAS hands. I’m going to contradict myself now! I just love big crystals – and I am a sucker for a top-hat sapphire. In the scheme of things, it is not over the top but if you are looking for a gentle dome that meets the edge of the bezel – then this watch is not for you. As a side note – if the top-hat sapphire is a step too far for you, I still have the original OEM Seiko crystal and can reinstall it and test it for you (60m is the limit of my testing equipment FYI). The genuine OEM silicone strap has the accordion-style which combines high durability and comfort. The strap also has the nice feature of the strap being wider than the lugs but reduced in width only at the point it inserts into the lugs.
