Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) has often been considered the inventor and greatest practitioner of the historical novel. He began his writing career as a well received poet, with the success of the poetic romance The Lay of the Last Minstrel (1805), followed by the immensely popular The Lady of the Lake (1810). He also produced extensive works of Dryden (18 vols., 1808) and Swift (19 vols., 1814). Hindered in part by the need to make money, he tired of narrative poetry and turned to prose romances, and the rest is history, The extremely popular series now known as the Waverley Novels consists of more than two dozen works dealing with Scottish history. Scott also drew on English history and other themes for novels like Ivanhoe (1819) and Kenilworth (1821). All his works were published anonymously until 1827. The Talisman, published in 1825, may be said to introduce the final third of the Waverley Novels. It recounts the thrilling deeds of Sir Kenneth, Prince Royal of Scotland, in the Holy Land and points adjacent. Its main characters are well known to all of us, such as Richard Coeur de Lion, Richard of the Lion Heart, who would become King Richard I of England. Illustrating this exciting novel for us, Federico Castellon created 14 aquatints (12 full-page and two double spreads) and 29 part-page drawings. The pulls from the original aquatine plates were made by the Societe des Procedes Sege Beaune in Creteil, Paris. Designing our book, John Lewis selected Bembo solid for the text, with titles in an Old English type. Compostion, presswork, and binding were performed by W. S. Cowell, Ltd., in Ipswich, Suffok, England. The paper, an ivory-toned laid antique, was specially made for this edition at the Abbey Mills in Holywell, Flintshire, Wales, and it contains the crown watermark of Abbey Mills. The spine is dark green Persian sheepskin on which the title is stamped in gold leaf, and the sides are covered with crimson English buckram. The endleaves, also in crimson, are of Tumba Ingres paper imported from Sweden. This is copy number 1057 of 1500, and is signed by Federico Castellon.
