Aynsley Cup & Saucer Cobalt Blue Orchard Fruit Grapes Peaches w/Gold 1972-2014 Exquisite Decorative CUP & SAUCER from AYNSLEY, Pattern ORCHARD FRUITS, GRAPES, PEACHES, PLUMS with GREEN & BROWN Leaves on WHITE Porcelain w/WARM YELLOW WASH Background, COBALT BLUE w/Scalloped Rims & Slight FLUTING, from Longton, Staffordshire, England, circa 1972-2014 DESCRIPTION: Both the cup & saucer have delicately scalloped and fluted. This set was produced in a striking manner with the purple plums, yellow & red peaches, green & purple grapes w/green & brown leaves on the high white of the bone china. The was behind the fruit is a warm yellow. The gold trim on the rim of the cup & saucer and the solid gold on the cup’s handle and pedestal foot are interesting touches. The outside of the cup and the saucer are a striking cobalt blue. The well of the saucer is the high white of the bone china. CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks and the gold trim appears solid as applied. DIMENSIONS: The cup has a diameter of 3 1/2″ with a height of 2 3/8″ while the height to the top obf the handle is 2 9/16″. The capacity of the cup is 6 ounces. The deep saucer has a diameter of 5 1/2″ and a height of 1″. HISTORY/MARKS: John Aynsley established his pottery in Longton, England in 1775 using local Staffordshire clay and elaborate designs. The company prospered, but his grandson, John Aynsley II, changed the focus of the business from pottery to fine bone china by adding 50% calcined bone ash to his porcelain compound. This produced a fine bone china that was exceptionally white, extremely strong and translucent. In 1861, he opened the Portland Works in Stoke-on-Trent to produce the many unique Aynsley designs that were becoming exceedingly popular. Queen Victoria commissioned Aynsley China to produce a full service for her personal use. This allowed the company to use the royal family seal in its logo, therefore, affirming the company’s reputation. The company remained in the ownership of the Aynsley family until becoming a publically listed company in 1948, still under the leadership of the Aynsley family. In 1970, the company was taken over by Waterford and by 1997 it became a part of the Belleek Pottery Group. On December 19, 2014, the BBC reported that Aynsley’s Longton factory had finally shut its doors. At the time, around 40 people were employed on the premises, which was one of the oldest ceramic firms in Stoke-on-Trent. Citing a drop in orders and high production costs, parent company Belleek Pottery Group announced that the factory had become financially unsustainable.
