Original WW2 dated War Office map entitled «DERBY» of the kind used by the Army, Home Guard, RAF, Civil Defence and other official organisations. Interestingly, the map has been reproduced using photostat technology, an invention pioneered almost forty years before WW2, and not usually favoured for standard military map production. However, the most intriguing thing about this map is the hand added markings relating to KILBURN and BUCKLAND HOLLOW, and the fact that it is accompanied by a list which is headed «NORTHERN COMMAND ORDNANCE SURVEY MAPS». «NORTHERN COMMAND» is seemingly a military reference, but the places mentioned feature on the rail network. Whilst KILBURN STATION had closed to passenger traffic over a decade earlier, the line was still being used for vital coal traffic for the War effort. BUCKLAND HOLLOW is the name of a rail junction on the main line to the West of Ripley. The base map was clearly produced in 1941 as the last two digits of the print code are still visible in the bottom left corner. The top right has a heading of «AREA No.2 – Weekly Production», so these may be additional clues as to the map’s original purpose. Intriguingly, KILBURN is labelled ‘12,000’ and BUCKLAND HOLLOW reads ‘6,000’, which all adds to the mystery. There is also evidence of other material having been attached, such as a leftover staple in the bottom right corner and a few patches of dried pasted glue in the right margin. Given the technology used, the paper is similar to photographic paper, although it is much less glossy. As such, it had become slightly brittle with age and had detached along a number of the fold lines. In order to remedy this, it has been carefully restored using a specialist acid free (non-yellowing) archive repair tape of the kind used by museum conservation departments etc. A very intriguing piece of History… Please see my other WW2 (and WW1) maps, photos, documents, kit etc (Seller’s Ref EB263 / 21)
