Internally clean with light yellowing to interior pages and owner’s inscription on front free end paper. Externally clean with very minor wear and a few tiny stains to cover. In Near Fine condition. Contents: Poison Damsels, the Tale of Two Thieves; Sacred Prostitution; and The Romance of Betel-Chewing, bibliography and an index. A collection of four essays, three of them discussing and analyzing passages from the Katha Sarit Sagara of Somadeva (The Ocean of Story) and the fourth titled «The Romance of Betel-Chewing» which discusses the appearance of this custom in the literature of India. «The present volume . covers a wide field of esoteric research into the curious, the bizarre and the mysterious. In the first of the essays we are introduced to that fascinating, but highly dangerous individual, the POISON DAMSEL. Her nature is examined and dissected, the methods of her dread work are described and the possible explanations considered from every possible angle – even including a masterly treatment of the still undecided question of the origin of venereal disease. The TALE OF THE TWO THIEVES is traced throughout its long history of over two thousand years. In the third essay that strange custom of what we may politely call SACRED PROSTITUTION is dealt with in considerable detail. The final essay consists of an exhaustive treatment on the custom of BETEL-CHEWING» Provenance: This item is from the combined libraries of noted astrology, numerology, and tarot authors and authorities Florence Evylinn Campbell (? – 1964) and Edith L. Randall (1896 – 1978) of Los Feliz, California. Their incredible library of some 2500 volumes was recently acquired en masse and roughly half of which will be sold off over the next several weeks and months. The library was owned for a time by June Sears Rogers (1914 – 2009) from whom’s estate the library was sourced. Each of the 3 women lived in the Los Feliz residence which is likely how the library was transferred intact over the course of five decades. Florence and Edith were very close, lifelong friends and were taught together by Arline Richmond, the daughter of noted Grand Master, Olney Richmond. After studying and developing a following in their own respective practices, Florence and Edith published ‘Sacred Symbols of the Ancients’ in 1947 concerning the mystical connections between life and the 52 card playing card deck. They also published separately – with Florence Campbell’s ‘Your Days are Numbered’ (1931) and Edith writing (w/ Donalie Fitzgerald) ‘Your Place in the Cards’ in 1974. All of their titles sold well and were taken to several printings. June Rogers acquired the copyright and re-issued ‘Sacred Symbols’ in 1989. This dynamic pair were instrumental in assisting and developing the careers of many Los Angeles area astrologers, tarot readers and mystics for several decades. As would be expected, the library is rich with content and depth in many areas including numerology, mysticisim, theosophy, tarot, astrology, hermeticism, magic, Rosicrucian study, Kabalah/Kabbalah/Qabalah, and many other areas. There are also a number of signed and inscribed volumes from the respective authors to one or both of these women.
