This 1940 John Pop Brennan Track Bicycle was owned and raced by my late grandfather Gerald W Nolte. Ironically there are people selling a pic of him here on ebay. He was a fire chief here in WI as well as an accomplished cyclist that actually qualified for the Olympic games in the 1950’s. This was not as honored by employers then as it is now. I have a newspaper article on him at my office that I will also share. Anyway he raced velodrome and track for distance. HE was the first cyclist to ride the Milwaukee Mile Oval. His training and riding buddy was a man by the name of Harvey Speigelhoff. You can Google him as well, another very accomplished rider. UPDATE 10/24/2024:I have been contacted by several enthusiasts here on ebay and I wanted to post their assessments of this bicycle. Ironically, I had joined a velodrome racing FB page to try and get more information and the opinions match. I wanted to share them below. I believe your bike is a much rarer Brennan special – a handbuilt race bike by John «Pop» Brennan. It might be worth a lot more than what you are asking in price. Use Google to search the Brennan name for more information – he was inducted into the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame. And the clear evidence of this bike’s special build is in the distinctive frame headtube with the two horizontal bands.Check out some examples of the Brennan bikes at the ClassicCyclesUS museum website – links on Google.Also, BSA did more than just make bicycles before WWII. They sold a full range of quality components and frame fittings for specialty makers to build bicycles. And that was especially true for the pre-war track and 6-day race bikes that almost exclusively used BSA cranks and chainrings – on the race bikes built in the USA, Canada, Australia and the UK.Any questions, just ask and I do my best to answer. That name stamped on the bottom bracket shell, «Robert H. Willbert» might be who the bike was originally custom built for and then later acquired by your grandfather. But I can’t find any search results for that Willbert name connected with bicycling. BSA made the bottom bracket shell as a one-piece casting that could be purchased by frame builders to make a custom bicycle. And that bottom bracket shell is like the heart of a bicycle upon which everything depends. It has to be strong, lightweight and accurately made to build up a precision racing bicycle.Back then, custom bike builders could pick and choose what components and frame fittings to use to build the custom bike, either from BSA or from other bicycle parts makers. Also, the builder could decide what frame tubing to use. Before WWII, the best lightweight tubing available for bike frames was made only in the UK by either Reynolds or their competitor Accles & Pollock. The earliest Schwinn Paramount racing bikes before the war were reportedly built using imported Accles & Pollock frame and fork tubes and later Schwinn switched to using Reynolds 531 tubing after the war.Your bike has all the hallmarks of a having been a custom built, professionally built racing bike originally made with the best available parts and lightest weight frame and forks tubes that money could buy. Probably came originally with wooden wheel rims which were once the go-to choice for the lightest track wheels but the wood quickly deteriorates over time. That explains why the wheels would have been rebuilt at some point with newer aluminum rims.But to be clear on this, your bike is exactly the type of track bike that would have been specially ordered and built for an American professional cycling team rider or an Olympic team rider anywhere from the mid 1930’s up to the early 1950’s. This bike belongs with a true enthusiast to be enjoyed. Ok Onto the bike:1. You will notice there is a «Jerry» name tag on the main tube2. BSA Birmingham Small Arms is the manufacturer, I believe in mid 40s or a little earlier)3. Steel Frame BSA is in raised lettering under the bottom bracket4. Rigida Rims and Hubs, I think these were added later, though still very old 27x 1 1/4 has old Michelin- Elan these will also need replacing5. Headset, Sprocket, Crank arms are all embossed with BSA Emblem6. Saddle is a very old Brooks leather with copper rivets7. NOTICE, there are no brakes or areas to mount brakes, this is a single speed bike with NO freewheel, they slowed their pedal to slow down and grabbed the rim in emergencies or pile ups.8. The bike is extremely light9. The bike has very intricate butting and pinstriping, for instance the head tube is made up of several «layers» almost as if the main head tube was cut out only enough to allow the tubes to fit ( if that makes sense)10. Chainring has the BSA letters in the spider11. Both sprockets are «skip tooth»12.
