This Bible appears to be unused and in very Nice Original Condition! 1881 REVISED KING JAMES NEW TESTAMENT (Commonly called the Westcott-Hort Version) (Fenton John Anthony Hort signed & Inscribed this Bible being sold) For more than two centuries, the King James Version was unrivaled among the Protestant churches of the English-speaking world. During the 19th century, the demands for revision became increasingly strong. In 1870, Bishop Wilberforce of Winchester submitted a resolution to the Upper House of the Convocation of Canterbury that a committee be appointed to consider a revision of the Bible. A committee was formed, representing the Church of England and nearly all of the evangelical bodies, including the Baptist, Congregational, Methodist, and Presbyterian. In 1871, an American Committee of 34 members were appointed to go over the work of the English revisers and to offer suggestions. In 1881, the Revised Version of the New Testament was published, with publication of the Revised Old Testament in 1885. The New Testament version commonly called the «Revised Version» (RV) or the «English Revised Version» (ERV) of 1881, of which the American Standard Version was an American edition. This version is a revision of the King James version made on the basis of Westcott and Hort 1881 and Tregelles 1857. The readings adopted by the committee of revisers were presented in a continuous Greek text in Palmer 1881, which includes marginal notes showing every departure from the Greek text presumed to underlie the King James version. The suggestions of the American Committee were considered by the English reviewers, but only those that were approved by a two-thirds vote by the British Committee were incorporated into the text. The Americans agreed to support the Revised Version and not to publish an edition of their own for a period of 14 years.
